CCH Axcess Tax Essentials costs $2,814 for 100 returns, $4,039 for 200 and $5,264 for 400 on Wolters Kluwer’s eStore, and CCH Axcess Client Collaboration costs $3,092 for 75 licences. The practice-management modules, Axcess Practice for time and billing and Axcess Workstream for projects, have no published price: they are quoted, and there is no free trial.

So the CCH Axcess price splits in two. The small-firm tax packages and the client-collaboration packages are sold online with a price on the page. Everything a firm uses to run its work, bill it and share documents (Practice, Workstream, Document and Portal) goes through a sales quote. This guide sets out every price Wolters Kluwer publishes, what the quoted parts cover, what to ask for in a quote, how the published prices of other practice systems compare, and where Uku fits.

CCH Axcess pricing is a good fit if:

  • You are a large firm already running Axcess Tax and want practice management on the same database
  • You prefer a negotiated, multi-module contract with one vendor
  • You need Wolters Kluwer’s tax calendar and enterprise-scale reporting
  • You are a new small firm that wants Axcess Tax from a published package

CCH Axcess pricing is not a good fit if:

  • You want to see the price of time, billing and workflow before a sales call
  • You don’t want to license documents, the portal and client collaboration separately
  • You want to try the software yourself before you sign
  • You are comparing per-user cost with cloud practice systems that publish theirs

Prices below were checked on Wolters Kluwer’s eStore and product pages on 2 October 2026, in US dollars.

CCH Axcess Pricing: In-Depth Overview

CCH Axcess has no single pricing page. Two families of packages are sold online with a price; the rest is a set of modules, each with its own quote. Here is each piece a practice-management buyer meets.

CCH Axcess Tax Essentials: $2,814 to $5,264

PackagePrice
Tax Essentials 100 (100 returns)$2,814
Tax Essentials 200 (200 returns)$4,039
Tax Essentials 400 (400 returns)$5,264
Additional returns$60.55 each

On the Wolters Kluwer eStore, Tax Essentials is “configured and designed specifically for small tax and accounting firms with four or less full-time tax professionals”. Each package includes CCH Axcess Tax with 1–5 users, federal 1040, 1040-NR, 1065, 1120, 1120S and 990 returns, five states and then pay-per-state, free self-guided training and support, and free tax planning tools.

The packages page adds the extras: specialty returns and the corporation power pack at $53.90 each, consolidated returns at $199. The packages “are intended for new customers only” and aren’t available to existing CCH Axcess or ProSystem fx Tax customers. Three larger packages, Core, Accelerate and Advantage (100–1,000 returns), add document requests, client collaboration, document storage and AI workflow management, and are priced by quote.

Essentials — ProsEssentials — Cons
Published price, buy onlineTax only; time and billing is an add-on
Implementation and training includedNew customers only
Five states includedReturns and states charged above the package

The Bottom Line 👉 A clear entry price for Axcess Tax, but it buys tax preparation, not practice management.

CCH Axcess Client Collaboration: $3,092 to $11,898

PackagePrice
75 licences$3,092
150 licences$6,067
300 licences$11,898

Client Collaboration is the client-facing piece for tax season: electronic engagement letters, customizable tax organizers, document request lists, integrated e-signatures and a taxpayer mobile app, for individual and business returns. Wolters Kluwer offers “three packages ranging from 75 licenses to 300 licenses, with the option to add on 100 additional licenses as needed”, and recommends a best-practices consulting session, which the eStore lists at $950.

The Bottom Line 👉 The client side of Axcess has a public price, from $3,092, and sits on top of whatever you pay for practice management.

CCH Axcess Practice: time and billing (quoted)

PriceCovers
Request a QuoteTime entry, billing, e-payments, KPI reports

Axcess Practice covers one-screen time and billing, clocks from the route sheet and tax return, “progress billing, multiple billing fee agreements and batch billing”, e-payments through supported partners with a Pay Now button, and reports on productivity, WIP and receivables. On the Tax Essentials packages page, time and billing management is listed under add-ons. The eStore sells Practice training separately: $135 for end-user eLearning, $950 for an optimization course.

Practice — ProsPractice — Cons
Progress, fixed and batch billingNo published price
WIP and receivables reportsProjects need Workstream
Shares the client database with TaxPayments through partners

The Bottom Line 👉 The time-and-billing core of the suite, priced only by quote, and only half of practice management on its own.

CCH Axcess Workstream: projects and due dates (quoted)

PriceCovers
Request a QuoteProjects, due dates, pools, templates

Axcess Workstream tracks projects and due dates, lets staff self-assign from project pools, updates government due dates from Wolters Kluwer’s tax calendar, and pushes template changes to existing projects. End-user eLearning is $135 on the eStore; the software itself is quoted.

Three CCH Axcess Workstream features — Project pools for staff to self-assign work, Tax calendar integration that updates government form due dates, and Flexible project templates whose changes flow to individual projects Source: Wolters Kluwer

The Bottom Line 👉 If you want recurring work tracked in Axcess, Workstream is a second module on the quote.

CCH Axcess Document and Portal: two modules for the client side (quoted)

PriceCovers
Request a Quote, eachDocument storage; client portal

Axcess Portal offers secure, two-way document exchange with clients, and Wolters Kluwer states that “CCH Axcess Document is a prerequisite for CCH Axcess Portal users”. So a client portal means licensing Document as well; e-signatures and organizers come with Client Collaboration, above. The Portal page also advertises “special packages for up to 15 user licenses” with complimentary support and training; their price isn’t listed.

The Bottom Line 👉 A document portal is two quoted modules on Axcess; in Uku it is included and free for clients.

Hidden Costs and Add-Ons

Beyond the modules, five costs are easy to miss:

  1. Returns and states above the package. On Tax Essentials, every return beyond the package is $60.55, specialty returns $53.90, consolidated returns $199, and states beyond five are pay-per-state.
  2. Module dependencies. Portal requires Document; projects require Workstream on top of Practice. A quote for “practice management” is really a quote for several modules.
  3. Training and consulting. The eStore lists $135 eLearning courses per module and $820–$950 best-practice and optimization sessions for Practice, Workstream and Client Collaboration.
  4. Integrations as development work. The CCH Axcess Open Integration Platform offers APIs for QuickBooks, Xero, CRMs, SharePoint and BI tools, but they are APIs, not a no-code connector; Zapier isn’t mentioned.
  5. Implementation time and add-ons you didn’t expect. Reviewers on TrustRadius mention a “very siloed” implementation team, being expected “to watch 40+ videos”, and “hidden add-ons that they deceive prospect into believe is a part of the system”. Ask for every module and service in writing.

What to Ask for in a CCH Axcess Quote

The published packages cover tax and client collaboration. For practice management, the quote is only as complete as the questions you ask. Ask Wolters Kluwer to put these on paper:

  1. The per-user price for each module: Practice, Workstream, Document and Portal.
  2. Whether you need Client Collaboration as well as Portal, and which licence tier.
  3. The term: annual or multi-year, and what happens at renewal.
  4. The 1–15 user package, if you qualify, and exactly which modules and support it includes.
  5. Implementation and training: what is included and what is billed at eStore rates.
  6. Payments: which processor, and its fees.
  7. Data on exit: what you can export and in which format.

Add the lines up, divide by users, and set the result next to a per-member price that already includes workflow, documents and a portal.

How CCH Axcess Pricing Compares with Other Practice Systems

Here is what cloud practice systems that work with US tax firms publish, per user, before taxes:

ProductStarting pricePer year
CCH Axcess Practice + WorkstreamQuotedQuoted
Uku Team$38 per member a month, annual$456
Financial Cents Team$49 per user a month, annual$588
Firm360 Basic$49 per user a month, annual$588
Karbon Team$59 per user a month, annual$708
Canopy Standard$74 per user a month, annual$888
TaxDome Pro$1,000 per seat a year$1,000

The one published Axcess price on the practice side is Client Collaboration, from $3,092 for 75 licences, before time, billing or workflow. Several of the systems above also connect to Axcess Tax: TaxDome lets you print Axcess returns into it, Financial Cents syncs through Google Drive, Firm360 syncs with FileSync, and Canopy saves files. For the details, see our CCH Axcess alternatives.

CCH Axcess vs Practice CS Pricing

Firms that leave one incumbent often price the other. Thomson Reuters Practice CS doesn’t display its pricing publicly, but according to available information and client reviews, it starts at around $1,000 per user annually, with project, staff and client management as add-on modules and a 12-month support commitment. On the Wolters Kluwer side, the practice modules are quoted too, but the tax and client-collaboration packages for small firms are sold online with a price.

The structures are similar: a time-and-billing core, workflow as an extra, and the client portal as a separate product (NetClient CS on one side, Axcess Portal and Client Collaboration on the other). The architecture is not: Practice CS is Windows software that needs hosting for remote work, while CCH Axcess was built for the cloud. For the Thomson Reuters side, see our Practice CS pricing guide.

Where CCH Axcess Falls Short

No price for practice management: tax and client collaboration have published packages, but Practice and Workstream don’t. You can’t compare Axcess practice management with a cloud practice system until sales quotes it.

Module math: time and billing, projects, documents and a portal add up to four modules, Portal can’t be bought without Document, and Client Collaboration is a separate package on top.

No trial: you see Axcess in a demo, not with your own clients.

Support and setup: on TrustRadius, five of eight visible reviews are one to three stars, mostly about support and implementation.

“The support is horrible - can't get anyone to respond to online support cases OR pick up the phone”

Integrations need developers: the APIs are there; the no-code connectors are not.

Best CCH Axcess Alternative: Uku

Uku is practice management for accounting, bookkeeping and audit firms with published, per-member prices. Workflow templates, time tracking, billing contracts, document management, e-signatures and a free client portal are on every plan, in a browser, with monthly or annual billing. Annual billing saves about 23%.

Uku pricing in USD — a team-size calculator, then Team at $38, Elite at $48 (most popular) and Enterprise at $88 per member per month on annual billing

Uku Solo Plan: $19/member/month (annual) or $25 (monthly)

PriceLimits
$19 a month annual, $25 monthly1 member, 20 active clients

Tasks, billing, the client portal, document management, e-signatures and all accounting integrations for one person.

The Bottom Line 👉 A full practice system for a sole practitioner at $228 a year.

Uku Team Plan: $38/member/month (annual) or $49 (monthly)

PriceLimits
$38 a month annual, $49 monthlyUnlimited members and clients

Unlimited members and clients, projects and access management. Workflow templates create every recurring task with its checklist, owner and due date, the job Axcess Workstream does.

A client's recurring workflow in Uku — monthly, quarterly and yearly tasks with their service tags, owners and day-of-month due windows, beside budget monitoring for that client

The Bottom Line 👉 Practice, Workstream, Document and Portal’s jobs in one plan at $456 per member a year.

Uku Elite Plan: $48/member/month (annual) or $62 (monthly)

PriceLimits
$48 a month annual, $62 monthlyUnlimited members and clients

Elite adds BI Analytics, mandatory time entries, workforce management, the public API, Zapier and the Uku MCP server. Billing contracts draft each period’s invoices from tracked time and each client’s agreement, which reduces invoice preparation from days to about 30 minutes.

Uku automated billing — 100 invoices created, sent and exported in one batch, with per-client amounts and margin change flagged green or red

The Bottom Line 👉 The closest match to Axcess Practice’s reporting depth, with Zapier and an API a non-developer can use.

Uku Enterprise Plan: $88/member/month (annual) or $99 (monthly)

PriceLimits
$88 a month annual, $99 monthlyUnlimited members and clients

Custom integrations, a dedicated account manager and assisted client import.

The Bottom Line 👉 For larger firms that want a named contact and help bringing every client across.

CCH Axcess Feature Value Breakdown (vs Uku)

Pricing and buying

CCH Axcess’s approach: published packages for small-firm tax (from $2,814) and client collaboration (from $3,092); practice modules quoted; no trial.

Uku’s approach: published per-member prices for the whole system, a 14-day trial and monthly or annual billing.

Value verdict: Uku for practice management, on transparency and on being able to try it first.

Practice management scope

CCH Axcess’s approach: Practice for time and billing, Workstream for projects, each licensed.

Uku’s approach: workflow, time and billing on every plan.

Value verdict: Uku, because one plan covers what takes two Axcess modules.

Client portal and documents

CCH Axcess’s approach: Document plus Portal, with Portal requiring Document, and Client Collaboration from $3,092 for engagement letters, organizers and e-signatures.

Uku’s approach: documents, e-signatures and the portal included, free for clients.

Value verdict: Uku.

Tax preparation

CCH Axcess’s approach: Axcess Tax on the same client database as Practice and Workstream.

Uku’s approach: no Axcess integration; returns stay in Axcess Tax.

Value verdict: CCH Axcess, outright. If the shared database matters most, no price difference changes it.

Scale and security

CCH Axcess’s approach: enterprise scale, used by 94 of the Top 100 firms, with multifactor authentication and encrypted portal storage.

Uku’s approach: built for firms of 2 to 100 people.

Value verdict: CCH Axcess for the largest firms; Uku for small and mid-sized ones.

The five-person firm test

A five-person firm, billed annually, before taxes:

Engagement letters, organizers, e-signatureClient Collaboration: $3,092 (75 licences)E-signatures and document requests included

Uku’s $2,280 covers every row. On the Axcess side, the one published figure, $3,092 for Client Collaboration, is already above it before time, billing or workflow. To compare the rest honestly, ask Wolters Kluwer for a five-user quote with Practice, Workstream, Document and Portal, or for the 1–15 user package, and add it to the left column.

How to Switch from CCH Axcess to Uku

If Uku is your answer, most firms are live in two to six weeks, at their own pace, and keep serving clients throughout. Plan the move against your Axcess renewal, and keep Axcess Tax for returns.

  1. Export and import your clients. Export the client list from Axcess (Return Manager, Quick Search set to All, Export Grid) and import it into Uku through the import flow.
  2. Rebuild your Workstream templates as Uku workflow templates. One per service, applied to every client who buys it.
  3. Set up billing contracts. Recreate each client’s billing arrangement from Axcess Practice; bill out open WIP first.
  4. Go live. Run one billing cycle in parallel, compare it with Axcess Practice, then switch off. Use the 90 minutes of onboarding that comes with every plan.

If your firm uses an AI assistant, the Uku MCP server connects in a day and can check the move for you: which clients came across, which have no workflow yet, and how the first Uku invoice run compares with the last one from Axcess.

Final Verdict: CCH Axcess vs Uku

👍 CCH Axcess publishes its small-firm entry points: Tax Essentials from $2,814 for 100 returns and Client Collaboration from $3,092 for 75 licences. Practice management is priced for firms that run the whole Wolters Kluwer suite: you license Practice, Workstream, Document and Portal one by one, on a quote, with Axcess Tax on the same client database. If that shared database is what your firm runs on, ask for a full quote with every module and service you’ll use.

👉 Uku shows its price on the page: from $19 a month for one person and $38 per member for a team, with workflow, time, billing, documents, e-signatures and the client portal included, monthly or annual billing, and a 14-day trial without a card. It doesn’t integrate with Axcess Tax. Try Uku free for 14 days or book a demo.

CCH Axcess asks you to request a quote for each practice module. Uku asks you to try it and decide.

How much does CCH Axcess Practice cost?

Does CCH Axcess have a free trial?

No. TrustRadius states that no free version or trial is available for CCH Axcess, and the product pages offer a demonstration and a quote request instead. Uku offers a 14-day free trial of its Elite plan without a credit card.

Is CCH Axcess more expensive than Uku?

For practice management you can't compare like for like, because Axcess Practice and Workstream are quoted. Uku Team is $38 per member a month on annual billing ($456 a year) with workflow, time, billing, documents, e-signatures and the client portal included.

Can I keep CCH Axcess Tax and use cheaper practice management?

Yes. Because Axcess is licensed by module, a firm can keep Axcess Tax and replace Practice, Workstream, Document and Portal with another practice-management system. Client details then live in two systems, and returns stay in Axcess Tax.
