  • Maine revised the 2026 withholding tables in August 2026 for higher standard deductions and the new surcharge. The withholding standard deduction is $12,850 single or $28,550 married, phased out between $102,250 and $177,250 (single) or $204,550 and $354,550 (married) of annual wages.
  • Each W-4ME allowance is $5,300 a year.
  • Without a valid W-4ME the employer withholds as single with no allowances.
  • 401(k) and Section 125 deductions reduce Maine wages. Federal W-4 step 4(b) deductions do not.

  • Unemployment Insurance (UI): 2.54% for new employers on the first $12,000 per employee; rates 0.31% to 6.60% Includes the 0.14% Competitive Skills Scholarship Fund and the Unemployment Program Administrative Fund assessments.
  • PFML employer share: 0.5% of wages for employers with 15 or more employees Employers with fewer than 15 employees owe no employer share.

Maine cities and towns do not withhold income tax from wages.
Bonuses
Supplemental wages paid separately from regular wages may be withheld at a flat 5%. Paid together with regular wages, they are withheld as one payment.

Why did Maine withholding change in August 2026?

Maine Revenue Services revised the 2026 tables for higher standard deduction amounts and a new 2% surcharge on high incomes. Payrolls after the revision use the new percentage method.

Who pays Maine PFML?

Employers with 15 or more employees remit 1% of wages and may deduct up to half from employees. Smaller employers remit 0.5% and may deduct all of it.

What happens if an employee gives no W-4ME?

The employer withholds as if the employee were single with no allowances until a valid W-4ME is provided.

Is there a flat rate for bonuses?

Yes. Supplemental wages paid separately may be withheld at 5%.
