What you pay forPublished prices, before quotes

People in your firm who use the system. Change it with − and +.

CCH Axcess $3,092+ Client Collaboration, 75 licences — Practice, Workstream, Document, Portal quoted on top
Uku Team $4,560 $38 / member / month, billed yearly — all of it
Axcess practice modules are quoted — add your quote to the $3,092.

CCH Axcess is built for the largest firms. The question is whether your firm needs four quoted modules to track its work, bill it and talk to its clients.

CCH Axcess is deep. Its reviewers talk about the rest.

The only review site with a CCH Axcess listing is TrustRadius, where it scores 7.3 out of 10. We read those reviews and Wolters Kluwer’s own module pages. Every reason below is in a named source.

  • Support

The reviews turn on support, not on tax.

CCH Axcess scores 7.3 out of 10 on TrustRadius, and five of the eight visible reviews are one to three stars. Almost none of them criticise the tax engine. They are about what happens when you need help.

The support is horrible - can't get anyone to respond to online support cases OR pick up the phone

Partner, accounting firm (1–50 employees) · TrustRadius, April 2025

  • Implementation

Setting it up is a project of its own.

Even satisfied reviewers describe implementation as the hard part — the same partner who gave Axcess four stars called it a complicated system that does the job. Another reviewer said they were expected to watch 40+ videos.

Their implementation team is very siloed

Partner, accounting firm (1–50 employees) · TrustRadius, January 2025

  • The add-ons

What's in the quote isn't always what you expected.

Axcess is licensed module by module. One reviewer felt the boundaries were drawn after the sale, not before it — worth getting every module and service in writing.

Hidden add-ons that they deceive prospect into believe is a part of the system.

Jason Bovell, Bovell Financial · TrustRadius, January 2023

  • The modules

    Practice management is four quotes.

Time and billing is Axcess Practice. Projects are Axcess Workstream. Documents are Axcess Document. The client portal is Axcess Portal — and “CCH Axcess Document is a prerequisite for CCH Axcess Portal users”. Every one says “Request a Quote”. The client side of tax season, Client Collaboration, is a separate package from $3,092 for 75 licences.

Three things CCH Axcess does better than we do.

One client database with Axcess Tax.

Practice, Workstream, Document and Tax read the same clients. Uku has no Axcess integration: if you move, client details live in both systems and returns stay in Axcess Tax. If that shared database holds your firm together, it outweighs everything else here.

Built for the largest firms.

Wolters Kluwer says 94 of Accounting Today's Top 100 firms use CCH Axcess, and its enterprise reviewers are its happiest. Project pools and a tax calendar that updates government due dates are built for that scale. Uku is built for firms of 2 to 100 people.

Security and an open API.

Multifactor authentication, files encrypted on upload and at rest, virus scanning, and an Open Integration Platform for QuickBooks, Xero, CRMs and BI tools. It takes developers to use, but it is deep.

One plan

Projects, time and billing in the same task.

On Axcess, time and billing is Practice and projects are Workstream. In Uku, every client gets a task plan — weekly payroll, the month-end close, quarterly filings, the annual return — with a timer on each task and the bill drafted from it, on every plan. Rebuild each Workstream template once and it runs for every client who buys the service.

An Uku client task plan — weekly payroll tasks, monthly close and bookkeeping, quarterly VAT and yearly filings, each with its own schedule
Client portal

Clients upload, answer and sign on the same task.

On Axcess, the portal is a module that requires the Document module. Uku's client portal and document management are on every plan and free for clients: you ask for documents on the task, the client uploads and signs there, and the conversation stays with the work. Your branding, your domain.

Uku client portal: the client's dashboard lists open tasks such as missing documents and a monthly financial review, with a task open on the right showing a checklist of requested invoices, uploaded files and a signature box
Billing

Invoices that draft themselves from each agreement.

Axcess Practice bills from time and WIP, with progress and batch billing. Uku starts from each client’s agreement: a billing contract says what the fee covers, tracked time and extra work land against it, and at period end the invoices draft themselves. Invoice preparation drops from days to about 30 minutes — and agreements monitoring flags an over-serviced client before the bill.

What firms see after switching.

1

plan instead of four modules

Workflow, time, billing, documents and the client portal — priced on the page.

2–6

weeks to go live

Export, workflow setup, billing contracts and one parallel billing cycle — at your own pace.

1000+

firms already on Uku

Including US CPA firms that have run a full tax season on it.

Leaving Axcess Practice, in four steps.

Axcess Tax stays where it is. You move the practice-management layer — and we’ll walk it with you.

01

Export your clients

Export the client list from CCH Axcess — Return Manager, Quick Search set to All, Export Grid — and import the sheet into Uku. Axcess Tax keeps doing returns.

02

Rebuild your Workstream templates

Each Workstream project type becomes an Uku workflow template, with the same steps, owners and due-date rules, applied to every client who buys it.

03

Set up billing

Bill out open WIP in Axcess Practice, then give each client a billing contract — hourly, fixed or per piece — so the first period's invoices draft themselves.

04

Go live

Run one billing cycle in parallel, compare it with Axcess Practice, then switch off Practice and Workstream. Most firms are live in two to six weeks.

FAQ

Switching from CCH Axcess — your questions

Can I keep CCH Axcess Tax if I switch to Uku?

Yes. CCH Axcess is licensed module by module, so you can keep Axcess Tax and move Practice, Workstream, Document and Portal to Uku. Uku has no Axcess integration, so the shared client database goes away: client details are kept in both systems and returns stay in Axcess Tax.

How much can a firm save switching from CCH Axcess to Uku?

We can't give an honest total, because Axcess Practice, Workstream, Document and Portal are priced by quote. What Wolters Kluwer does publish: Client Collaboration from $3,092 for 75 licences and Tax Essentials from $2,814 for 100 returns. Uku Team is $38 per member a month billed yearly — $4,560 for a 10-person firm — and covers workflow, time, billing, documents, e-signatures and the client portal. Ask Wolters Kluwer for a quote on the four practice modules for the same team and compare.

Will I lose data moving from CCH Axcess to Uku?

Your clients come across from an Axcess export. Time entries, WIP and invoice history stay in Axcess Practice and its reports, so bill out open WIP before the switch and keep the reports you need. Axcess Tax and its returns are untouched.

How long does it take to switch from CCH Axcess Practice to Uku?

Most firms are live in two to six weeks, at their own pace, while still serving clients. Plan it outside tax season and ahead of your Axcess renewal, and run one billing cycle in parallel before switching off. Every account gets a free 90-minute onboarding session.

Is CCH Axcess a bad product?

No. For a large firm running the whole suite on one client database it is hard to replace, and Wolters Kluwer says 94 of the Top 100 firms use it. The firms that move the practice-management layer are usually smaller ones that don't want four quoted modules for time, projects, documents and a portal, and that need support they can reach.

Is there an annual contract with Uku?

No. Uku bills monthly with no long-term commitment — cancel anytime. You can pay annually for about 23% off if you prefer, but it's never required.
