European Accounting Review Annual Conference (2027)

  • Dates: April 1–2, 2027
  • Location: Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy
  • Cost: TBA (the 2026 edition was €190)
  • Previous edition: 19 March 2026, WHU Campus Düsseldorf, Germany

The European Accounting Review (EAR) Annual Conference stands apart from typical industry trade shows. It serves as a high-level scholarly forum designed for deep dives into accounting research, methodology, and future advancements. If you are looking to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical application, this is the place to be.

The 2026 edition ran at the WHU Düsseldorf Campus on 19 March; the 2027 conference moves to Bologna. The format emphasises openness and flexibility, welcoming research from all regions and paradigms provided it communicates relevance to an international audience.

Key tracks:

  • Young Scholar Track: Tailored for non-tenured faculty and Ph.D. students. This is an excellent opportunity to present job market papers and receive constructive feedback from established journal editors.
  • Open Science Track: Focuses on research methods and design, encouraging the sharing of unique datasets or code.
  • Registered Reports: A dedicated track for authors to pre-register experiments or field studies.

Why Attend? Unlike broad networking events, this conference offers a collaborative environment with assigned discussants for each paper, ensuring you get detailed, actionable feedback on your work.

Important for researchers: Conference attendance is primarily by invitation based on paper submissions, so the submission deadline matters more than the registration date. Check the current Call for Papers rather than working from last year’s timings.

For full submission guidelines and the current Call for Papers, visit the official EAR 2027 conference page.

European Accounting Association’s 49th Annual Congress (EAA Congress 2027)

  • Dates: May 26–28, 2027
  • Location: University of Turin, Department of Management “Valter Cantino”, Turin, Italy
  • Cost: TBA
  • Previous edition: 27–29 May 2026, Prague University of Economics and Business (VŠE), Czech Republic

The 2027 congress is the association’s 50th-anniversary edition — the EAA was founded in 1977 — which usually means a larger programme and heavier competition for accommodation. Book early if you plan to attend.

The EAA Annual Congress invites finance and accounting professionals to a different European host city each year — Prague hosted the 48th congress in May 2026, and Turin takes the 49th. It is a cornerstone event for scientific and educational exchange.

What to expect:

  • Comprehensive programme: A mix of scientific sessions, the EAA PhD Forum, and collaborative workshops (including the EAA Hackathon).
  • Networking: Beyond the sessions, the congress runs a substantial social programme connecting peers from over 250 partner universities and global firms.
  • A host university setting: Each edition is hosted by a major European business school, in 2027 the University of Turin’s Department of Management.

Whether you are an academic researcher or a practitioner looking to stay ahead of industry trends, the EAA Congress offers a blend of professional development and cultural experience.

Xerocon London — not returning in 2027

  • 2027 dates: no London edition. Xero has indicated Xerocon moves to Australia in 2027; no city or dates published yet.
  • Previous edition: 8–9 July 2026, Olympia London, £150 (early bird)

Often dubbed the ‘Glastonbury for accountants,’ Xerocon is more than a conference; it is a cultural touchstone for the cloud accounting community. Xerocon rotates between regions — London and Denver in 2026, Australia next — so if a London edition matters to your plans, treat it as a 2028 question rather than a 2027 one and watch Xero’s events page for the announcement.

What the London edition typically offers:

  • The Future of Accounting: A deep dive into how AI (including Xero’s new tools) is reshaping compliance and advisory workflows.
  • Wellbeing & Strategy: Sessions focused not just on tech, but on running a sustainable, healthy practice—a core value we share at Uku.
  • New Community Stage: A fresh platform for partners to share their unique perspectives and success stories.

The experience: The legendary Xerocon Party is a fixture of the schedule, offering a chance to unwind and network in a festival-like atmosphere.

Why attend? Beyond the famous parties and swag, Xerocon offers tangible value through its ecosystem. It is the best place to discover apps that integrate with Xero to solve specific operational pain points—like capacity planning and billing—saving your team hundreds of billable hours.

How to choose between them

The seven events split into two groups, and picking the wrong group is the most common way to waste a travel budget.

Academic conferences — EAR, the EAA Congress, AMIS and the FMA European Conference — are scholarly forums. Attendance often runs through paper submission rather than open registration, and the value is in research, methodology and peer feedback. If you run a firm and want to leave with software to evaluate on Monday, these are not your events.

Practitioner events — Accountex London, Xerocon and Accounting Summit — are where firm owners and managers benchmark their tech stack, compare vendors face to face, and collect CPD hours. Accountex is the largest and free to attend, which makes it the default first choice if you can only justify one trip.

A practical note on timing: the confirmed 2027 dates cluster in April and May, with EAR (1–2 April, Bologna), Accountex (12–13 May, London) and the EAA Congress (26–28 May, Turin) inside eight weeks of each other. If you are budgeting for two, book flights and accommodation before the turn of the year — the Turin congress is the EAA’s 50th-anniversary edition and will draw a bigger crowd than usual.
